what if we gave ourselves a little more grace for doing all of this for the first time?

a note before listening: this conversation includes discussions of depression, mental health treatment, sexual assault, and childhood sexual abuse. please take care of yourself while listening.

in this episode, angie sits down with her friend mindy kordash-shim for an honest conversation about motherhood, mental health, friendship, healing, and learning to hold a little more compassion for yourself along the way.

mindy shares how becoming a mother of two challenged her sense of identity, the depression that followed, and her experience seeking help after other treatments weren't giving her the relief she needed. she opens up about undergoing transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms), what it felt like to slowly come back to herself, and the importance of continuing to look for support when something isn't working.

the conversation also moves into some of the harder experiences mindy has carried throughout her life, including sexual assault, the ways she learned to push those experiences down, and what it has looked like to revisit them as an adult and a mother. through it all, mindy reflects on friendship, speaking your truth, and finding compassion without minimizing the harm we've experienced.

in this episode:

  • the identity shift that can come with motherhood
  • giving yourself grace when parenting feels hard
  • the importance of friendships where you can say the hard things out loud
  • mindy's experience with depression and seeking treatment
  • her experience with transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms)
  • recognizing what it feels like to begin coming back to yourself
  • processing past trauma at a different stage of life
  • speaking honestly about harm instead of keeping quiet for the comfort of others
  • navigating differences with the people we love
  • holding compassion for ourselves and the complicated humanity of others

mindy's reminder is a simple one we could probably all use: this is your first time doing this. you deserve to have a soft spot for yourself.

if this conversation resonates with you, we'd love to continue it.
