The 1930s to the 1950s saw the creation and flourishing of several independent record labels that were dedicated to the developing trends in jazz. These labels produced a wealth of recordings featuring new as well as standard jazz compositions, played by smaller groups of musicians and singers whose talents and styles were as delightful as they were extraordinary. We'll listen today to a selection of recordings made for labels like Commodore, Keynote and Verve, part of a treasury that marked this period as one of the golden ages of the genre. Today we conclude our annual tour of the summer sky at night in song. After our shows celebrating stars and the moon, we listen today to songs about the night.
