A single lantern appeared at the gravel junction of County Road 7 and Fallow Road every June for decades, its glass chimney spotless and its wick trimmed - and a nine-and-a-half-inch left footprint pressed into the shoulder beside it. Why would someone on foot, under cover of night, carry and place the same barn-red stamped-tin lantern at that exact crossroads each June for at least eighty years?
In this episode, we follow the records, letters, and eyewitness photographs that trace the lantern back to a missing young woman and a pattern logged by the local constable, and we ask whether a personal act of secrecy became a ritual passed through time. - The lantern described in 1931 was a barn-red stamped-tin, kerosene-fueled lantern with a clean glass chimney and a wick trimmed to a quarter-inch.
- Constable Thomas Pell recorded a left footprint pressed into the soft shoulder, measured at nine and a half inches, in June 1931 and noted the same print again in June 1933.
- Darlene Wilson was born circa 1907, ran community suppers from ~1925 to October 1928, and stopped attending after April 1929.
- A never-sent letter from Margery Wilson found in an almanac dated 1931 mentions Darlene’s pregnancy and says she was sent to Marion in June 1929; Darlene gave birth in December 1929.
