  • Behind the Ceramic Competition with Shaydee Watson
    2024/05/24

If you like to look “behind the scenes”, then this episode is for you! Today Bailey is sitting down with Shaydee Watson for an inside look at the 25th San Angelo North American Ceramic Competition. How do artists ship work to the museum? What happens when an art piece breaks in transit? How do we install hundreds of ceramics into the galleries? Shaydee answers all in today’s episode.

Shaydee Watson is the Curatorial Assistant and Cultural District Manager here at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, where she has helped put together countless art exhibitions with our Curator Laura Huckaby for over 10 years.

    What is the Ceramic Competition?

The San Angelo North American Ceramic Competition, hosted every two years, is open to artists residing in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Clay or ceramic artworks, both functional and sculptural, are eligible for submission. Submissions must have been completed within the last two years. The 2024 competition is juried by Texas ceramic artist and curator Louise Rosenfield.

In a small focus exhibit within the Competition exhibition, the museum features the work of one distinguished guest artist, who also conducts a day-long demonstration workshop the day after the exhibition opening. The 2024 Distinguished Guest Artist is Caddo potter Chase Kahwinhut Earles.

The Ceramic Competition will be on display at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts from April 19 to June 23, 2024.

Today we are joined by John Schoonover and Louise Smith, Grandchildren to Frank E. Schoonover: painter, illustrator, and photographer, whose artwork can now be viewed in SAMFA’s Gallery 1. Our exhibition: N.C Wyeth and the Golden Age of American Illustration will be on display until March 31st, 2024. We are featuring works from Frank Schoonover, right alongside the work of N.C. Wyeth and teacher Howard Pyle, whom Schoonover and Wyeth studied with.

Frank E. Schoonover produced thousands of paintings throughout his long career, many as illustrations for written works that ran the gamut from science fiction to magazine articles. He also was a teacher, a designer, and a landscape painter, and helped organize what is now the Delaware Art Museum.

Gabriel and Bailey are talking about one of SAMFA's Current Exhibits: Microscape: A Studio Art Quilt Associates Global Exhibition
    January 19 – March 31, 2024

"Our known world stretches far beyond what we can see with the unaided eye. Microscopes, magnifying glasses, and virtual imaging techniques reveal a world of great beauty and complexity. That world contains the smallest particles, tiniest organisms, smallest landscape, or natural details and provides us with an abundance of artistic inspiration. The art quilts in the exhibit explore a corner of the world at high magnification, capturing tiny wonders at the microscopic level, or by zooming in on a larger object to show its smallest details."

If you want to see these pieces on display, check out SAMFA's galleries! Open Tuesdays - Saturdays 10 am - 4 pm, and Sundays 1 pm - 4 pm.

You can also see pictures of these pieces, along with information about each artist online at (https://www.saqa.com/art/exhibitions/microscape)
