Journalism - independent and critical

Audio Archive Podcast – Go against the Grain is a long-term journalistic project and digital archive for conversations, interviews, reports, and essays on politics, society, and culture. Two to four new podcast episodes are released each month.

For more than three decades, we have been conducting interviews with philosophers, authors, activists, and scientists worldwide. Our interviewees explain the complex developments of our time and place them in an easily understandable and contemporary context within the global framework.

The Audio Archive Podcasts focus neither on mass media uniformity nor on unreflective pack journalism, but on differentiating insights: enlightening, knowledgeable and free from economic interests.

All Audio Archive podcasts are free. No revenue is generated through advertising. No AI support.

More details about the project, background informations, articles, video shorts, essays and all podcasts you'll find on our webpage and archive

  • Die Koranforschung - The History of Qur’anic Studies - L'histoire de l'étude du Coran mit/with Claude Gilliot
    2026/10/16

/🎓 Claude Gilliot’s lecture traces the history of Qur’anic studies back to its beginnings in the 19th century. As the ‘little sister’ of critical biblical scholarship, German critical Qur’anic studies in particular gained worldwide renown. The National Socialists put an end to critical Qur’anic studies. From then on, the believers’ interpretation of the Qur’an was regarded as the standard. This was in the hope that Muslims would dare to rise up against the British with the help of the National Socialist Rommel Army. It was not until the 1970s that a few outsiders began to challenge this uncritical understanding of scholarship. Claude Gilliot’s lecture takes us right up to the present day of critical Qur’anic studies.

  • Das indische Budhan Strassentheater - The Budhan Street Theatre in India von/by Christoph Burgmer
    2026/10/02

/🎓 On the outskirts of Ahmedabad, not far from the Sabarmati Ashram founded by ‘Babu’ Mahatma Gandhi – the starting point of the famous Salt March – lies the village of Chharanagar. This is home to the Chharas, a community that was once nomadic. In the predominantly Muslim Indian state of Gujarat, alcohol is banned. The Chharas, who were forcibly settled by the British and classified as genetically criminal (criminal tribes act 1871) on racist grounds, were only able to survive by illegally distilling and selling alcohol. To this day, every other house has a homemade still in its back garden. To break out of this vicious circle of criminalisation, the Budhan Street Theatre was founded. We visited Chharanagar and the Budhan Theatre.
