🎓 Im Ersten Welktkrieg, als Arbeiter aus Mittelägypten und Nubien nach Kairo kamen um für die Briten kriegswichtiges Material zu produzieren, nahmen sie die mittelalterlichen Gräber der Totenstadt am Rande der ägyptischen Altstadt als kostenlose Unterkunft. Es war das Erste so genannte informelle Viertel der ägyptischen Hauptstadt. Seither sind zahlreiche andere in der 20 Millionen Metropole entstanden. Informelle Vieretel sind nicht unbedingt Elendsquartiere oder Slums. Es sind formal gesehen zunächst einmal Stadtteile, in den die Besitzverhältnisse nicht geklärt sind. Christoph Burgmers Reportage entführt in die komplexe Lebenswirklichkeit der informellen Viertel der ägyptischen Hauptstadt am Nil.

/🎓 During World War I, when workers from Middle Egypt and Nubia came to Cairo to produce war materials for the British, they took up residence in the medieval tombs of the City of the Dead on the outskirts of Cairo’s Old City as free housing. It was the first so-called informal neighborhood in the Egyptian capital. Since then, numerous others have sprung up in the metropolis of 20 million people. Informal neighborhoods are not necessarily shantytowns or slums. Formally speaking, they are first and foremost neighborhoods where ownership status is unclear. Christoph Burgmer’s report takes listeners into the complex reality of life in the informal neighborhood in Egyptian capital on the Nile.
