What My Daughter’s Appetite Taught Me About My Own Wounds
In this episode of Lift the Shame: The Podcast, Crystal explores the tender and often hidden experience of feeling triggered by your child’s appetite.
For many mothers in eating disorder recovery, a child’s freedom with food can bring up unexpected fear. Your child may ask for more, enjoy dessert, reach for another serving, or say they are still hungry — and even though part of you wants to support food freedom, another part of you may feel anxious, controlling, or afraid.
This episode gently names the hidden shame: “My child’s appetite brings up fear in me.”
Crystal reflects on how our children’s freedom with food can mirror the places where we were not allowed to feel free. Their hunger, enjoyment, desire, and trust in their bodies may touch old wounds around restriction, body shame, food rules, and the fear of passing disordered patterns on.
In this episode, we explore:
Why your child’s appetite can feel triggering in eating disorder recovery
How children’s food freedom can mirror places where we were not free
The grief that can surface when giving your child what you needed
The difference between feeding from attunement and feeding from fear
Why structure and boundaries can exist without shame or control
How fear of passing it on can become overwhelming
A gentle pause practice for moments when your child’s appetite activates old stories
Reflection question:
What am I afraid this means?
Gentle practice:
The next time your child’s appetite brings up fear, pause and ask:
What am I afraid this means?
Is this about my child right now, or is this touching an old story in me?
Then, if it feels supportive, offer yourself this reminder:
My child’s appetite is not the emergency. Something tender in me may be asking for care.
Gentle reminder:
Sometimes our children’s freedom with food mirrors the places where we were not allowed to feel free.
Your child’s appetite is not a problem. Your activation is not proof that you are failing. It is information about what still needs tenderness.
