You read fifteen centuries and chose Rome in a week - what would you risk?

This episode explores the life of Pyotr Emelianov, a man whose unwavering faith led him on a collision course with the authorities of his time. It delves into the profound question of what it costs to remain true to oneself when the world conspends decades trying to change you.

Person: Pyotr Emelianov
Born: Around 1889
Location: Ufa Governorate, east of the Ural mountains
Event: Profession of Faith in 1918
Died: August 14, 1936

- Pyotr Emelianov was born into a family of Priestless Old Believers, a community that had separated from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century.
- Around 1901, his family joined the Russian Orthodox Church as Edinovertsy, Old Believers who accepted reunion with Orthodoxy while keeping their ancient rite.
- He was brought to the Pochaiv Lavra in Volhynia, one of Eastern Europe's great monastic complexes, where he was tonsured and studied extensively.
- Through his reading of Church Fathers and council records, he independently concluded that authority in the Christian Church must reside with the Pope, without ever meeting a Catholic.
- In 1918, he convinced the majority of his 828-member Old Ritualist Orthodox parish near Lugansk to enter communion with Rome.
