This message from Elder Steven Howard challenges believers to move beyond temporary feelings and develop the determination to stand firmly for Christ. Preaching from 2 Timothy 1, he emphasizes the need to guard the faith, hold fast to the truth, and remain faithful even when following Jesus becomes difficult.

Elder Howard begins by reflecting on the changing spiritual climate around us and the importance of protecting what God has entrusted to us. Paul’s words to Timothy provide the foundation: stir up the gift of God, do not be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord, and hold fast to sound words in faith and love.

Timothy had an unfailing faith that had been passed down through his family, but he was still instructed to stir up what God had placed within him. God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. The message reminds us that being born again is the greatest gift and the greatest transformation a person can experience.

Elder Howard makes an important distinction between motivation and determination. Using the testimony of a Marine who was told, “You don’t need motivation. You just need determination,” he applies that principle to the Christian life. Feelings can change, circumstances can become difficult, and opposition can increase, but believers must determine that they will continue to serve God, hold fast to His Word, and refuse to compromise.

The church faces pressure from the world, society, and even from within its own walls. Unforgiveness, division, superficial religion, and a lack of genuine prayer can weaken the testimony of God’s people. Elder Howard calls believers back to the secret place with God, consistent prayer, the Word of God, fellowship with other believers, and a sincere relationship with Jesus Christ.

He also challenges Christians not to be ashamed of their testimony. One encounter with God can change a life, and believers should be willing to tell others what Jesus has done for them. The Gospel has not changed, and there is no substitute or “plan B” for salvation through Jesus Christ. Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again, bringing life and immortality through the Gospel.

The examples of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and Daniel demonstrate what determination looks like. They refused to sell out to the pressures around them. Their faith was tested, but they remained committed to God, and God was with them through the fire and the lions’ den.

Elder Howard reminds us that we must guard what has been entrusted to us and contend for the faith. When spiritual opposition comes, we cannot allow discouragement, sin, fear, or the opinions of others to pull us away from God. We need to keep coming to church, stay in the Word, pray, rehearse what God has already done, and keep our minds and hearts focused on things above.

The Gospel still saves. Jesus still changes lives. God is still calling people out of darkness and into His kingdom. The answer is not simply waiting until we feel motivated. We need determination to hold fast, remain faithful, and keep serving God.

Don’t be ashamed of your testimony. Guard what God has given you. Hold fast to the truth. Keep your eyes on Jesus and determine that, no matter what comes, you will continue to stand for Christ.
