You know the moment. Someone asks what you do, you say you run an online community, and their face does the polite blank nod. So you start explaining. No, not a Facebook group. No, not a course, although there are courses in it. No, people pay to be there. No, I'm not a moderator, I built the whole thing, it's my actual business. And by the time you're done you've said the word "not" about nine times and they still think you run a group chat as a hobby. I did this exact dance for years, including on stage at Circle's Eclipse launch event, where I got asked what community I run and gave the tiny answer to a thimble of what I actually do. And then it hit me. The problem was never that people don't get it. The problem is the word. Community is the wrong word, and it's making us sell ourselves short.
