Is your athlete entering a new team, season, or level and already feeling like they have to prove they belong?
Alaysia Howard is a 14-year-old freshman preparing for her first high-school basketball season at Indian Creek School after competing on the AAU circuit with the Maryland Belles.
She’s entering a new environment with older players, different expectations, and a role that is still taking shape.
START WITH THE FREE PRESSURE PATTERN SNAPSHOT
If moving to a new level is changing your athlete’s confidence, communication, effort, or decision-making, start by identifying what changes first when pressure shows up.

After spending much of her basketball journey in the post, Alaysia is now developing her guard and wing skills while preparing for whatever role her team needs.
But one of the strongest lessons from her story has nothing to do with position:
You don’t have to prove yourself right away.
Alaysia talks about focusing on learning, trusting the work she has already put in, and understanding that playing time, production, and growth don’t all have to happen immediately.
She also explains what she wants to do when her first real pressure moment arrives:
Recognize the moment.
Calm her body.
Calm her mind.
Focus on what she needs to do next before pressure turns into panic.
And when scoring isn’t happening, she knows she can still impact the game through rebounding, running the floor, passing, defending, and hustle.
For parents, the bigger question is:
Can your athlete stay committed to the process when the role, results, and recognition haven’t arrived yet?
Sometimes development means learning how to be new again without treating every uncertain moment like proof that you don’t belong.
