  • #241 In Conversation with Kino MacGregor and Dr. M.A. Alwar
    2026/10/30

What does it really mean to be a good yoga teacher? Is it enough to understand the teachings, or must we also embody them in how we live?

In this episode of the Yoga Inspiration Podcast, Kino MacGregor welcomes Dr. M.A. Alwar, esteemed Sanskrit scholar, senior professor at Maharaja Sanskrit College in Mysore, and managing trustee of the Samskrita Foundation, for a conversation exploring the Bhagavad Gītā, the teacher-student relationship, and the importance of preserving the living traditions of Indian philosophy.

Drawing from his lifelong study of Sanskrit and the Bhagavad Gītā, Dr. Alwar shares insights into the guru-shishya parampara, the traditional transmission of knowledge from teacher to student, and the essential qualities of both a sincere student and a qualified teacher. Together, they explore humility, devotion, ethical responsibility, and the importance of practicing what we teach.

The conversation also examines how the Bhagavad Gītā addresses life's most difficult questions, from Arjuna's despair and moral uncertainty to the cultivation of discernment, inner steadiness, and spiritual wisdom. Dr. Alwar offers practical guidance for students beginning their study of the Gītā, reminding us that its teachings remain relevant throughout every stage of life.

    In this episode, you'll explore:

    • The importance of the guru-shishya relationship and receiving knowledge through a living tradition.

    • Why humility, respect, questioning, and service are essential qualities of a sincere student.

    • How Dr. Alwar began studying the Bhagavad Gītā as a child and continues learning throughout his life.

    • Where beginners can start when approaching the Bhagavad Gītā.

    • How Arjuna's despair becomes the foundation for spiritual inquiry.

    • The relationship between dharma, ethical responsibility, and making difficult decisions.

    • The qualities of a good yoga teacher and the importance of practicing what we preach.

    • Why both teachers and students remain lifelong seekers of knowledge.

    • How the Bhagavad Gītā offers guidance for cultivating steadiness during challenging times.

Kino and Dr. Alwar will continue exploring these teachings in person during Kino's upcoming Rishikesh retreat in March, offering students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of yoga philosophy through direct study and shared practice.

  • #240 Yoga Will Show You the Way: The Attitude That Transforms Practice
    2026/10/16

Sharath Ji used to say, "Yoga will show you the way." Those simple words hold the essence of the yoga path. Practice is not about control or achievement. It is about devotion, humility, consistency, and trust in the process itself.

Yoga evolves as we evolve. Some days, practice is strong and fiery; other days, soft and subtle. The only way this evolution stops is if we stop practicing. When we show up with respect and steadiness, yoga begins to teach us directly, revealing that the true depth of practice extends far beyond physical postures.

The true posture of yoga practice is an inner one. Come not to take, but to give. Bring humility instead of pride, devotion instead of demand. Through abhyāsa, or steady, devoted effort, we cultivate the conditions for saumanasya, the quiet happiness and clarity of mind described in yoga philosophy.

Keep practicing. Let your practice change shape, let it reveal your heart, and trust that yoga will continue to show you the way.

  • #239 Do We Need a Teacher? The Role of the Guide in Yoga and the Journey Within
    2026/10/02

In this episode of the Yoga Inspiration Podcast, Kino MacGregor explores one of yoga's most enduring questions: Do we need a teacher? Through personal stories, classical yoga philosophy, and reflections on lineage, she looks at the role of the teacher as guide, the responsibility of the student, and the importance of discernment on the spiritual path.

From the Bhagavad Gītā to the modern yoga classroom, this conversation explores how trust, humility, dialogue, and lived experience shape the teacher-student relationship. Kino reflects on the difference between guidance and authority, why teachers are not infallible, and how a healthy relationship with a teacher should strengthen rather than replace a student's own awareness and agency.

This episode is an exploration of yoga philosophy, spiritual guidance, lineage, and what it means to keep the teachings alive while allowing them to remain relevant in a contemporary practice.
