We often hear that Xerxes’ invasion of Greece was a massive failure, but the reality at Salamis in 480 BCE was far more complex and terrifying for the Athenians. This episode dives into the naval engagement where Persian supremacy nearly crushed Greek resistance, exploring how Admiral Artemisia of Halicarnassus outmaneuvered the larger fleet and why Xerxes made the critical decision to withdraw his land army after seeing his navy battered in the narrow straits. We examine the logistics of the Achaemenid war machine, the role of Phoenician sailors who provided the bulk of the fighting ships, and the psychological impact of the battle on both sides. Through the eyes of Herodotus and modern archaeological findings, we reconstruct the chaos of the Strait of Salamis, where triremes rammed each other in tight quarters, turning numerical superiority into a deadly liability. Join us as we uncover the tactical brilliance of Themistocles, the courage of the Spartan king Leotychides, and the moment the Persian Empire’s invincibility cracked, setting the stage for the eventual rise of Athens as a maritime power. #Salamis #XerxesI #ArtemisiaOfHalicarnassus #AchaemenidEmpire #AncientGreekHistory #NavalBattle #PersianWars #Thermopylae #Herodotus #Trieres #PhoenicianNavy #Themistocles #StraitOfSalamis #AncientMilitaryStrategy #MiddleEastHistory #FexingoHistory #History #ClassicalAntiquity Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
