  • Telling and Rehearsing the Story - A Sermon on Psalm 34
    2026/11/02
"Taste and see that the Lord is good." These words from Psalm 34, read this Sunday by Mark Ricchio at Port Nelson, may seem better suited for happy times than for times of mourning and reflection, but as the Rev. Dr. Michael Brooks discusses in his sermon, Psalm 34 includes both assurance and reflections on trouble. It is an appropriate theme for All Saints Day, when we remember the saints in the church and our lives who are present and those who have passed away from us to God. Michael speaks on how remembering and mourning for those who have gone includes telling their stories in faith, including both the good and the difficult.

  • A Dwelling Place - A Sermon on Psalm 90 (selected verses) by the Rev. Terry Dempsey
    2026/10/26
The Psalms speak eloquently of God, humankind and just about everything else. Psalm 90 is the only Psalm attributed to Moses. It is a corporate, hope-filled prayer that brings us face-to-face with the eternal greatness of God, and the fragile brevity of human life. It reminds us that our days are limited, but that God is our eternal refuge and source of mercy and love. In this sermon, guest preacher Rev. Terry Dempsey reflects on the meaning of God being our dwelling place - compared to a place where we live. In a world that rushes toward the temporary, Psalm 90 calls us to number our days, to seek God's compassion, and anchor our work in hope in the One who is from everlasting to everlasting.

The Rev. Terry Dempsey is a retired Baptist minister who served for a number of years at Burlington Baptist Church. Terry is no stranger to Port Nelson, having covered sabbatical leaves for our ministerial staff in the past.

  • It is the Lord's - A Sermon on Matthew 22:15-22
    2026/10/19
“Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” As Port Nelson observes World Food Day, the Rev. Dr. Michael Brooks reflects on the question to Jesus about paying taxes in Matthew 22:15-22. What does it mean to give to God the things that are God's in our time? On a day when we remember food as a blessing from God, how are we called to share with those who presently lack this blessing?

  • Thanksgiving: Me to We - A Sermon on Matthew 22:1-14
    2026/10/13
Thanksgiving is a time when families and friends gather to share love and togetherness through food and fellowship. Yet, it seems that many of our modern ways of expressing thanksgiving are focused on individual statements of gratitude rather than communal belonging and blessings. This Thanksgiving weekend, the Rev. Dr. Michael Brooks reflects on how the experience of the Christian church, Jesus' parable of the wedding banquet in Matthew 22:1-14, and the reminders to Israel in Deuteronomy 8:7-18 offer a form of thanksgiving that expands our perspective from "me" to "we."

Theologian Diana Butler Bass says, "Giving thanks is the primary communal emotion of Christianity." It's an emotion that we see in our prayers together and in the church's oldest traditions of meal-sharing: Commuion, or the Eucharist, and a reminder that the "Me to We" mindset is much, much older than the not-for-profits, campus organizations and various self-help books that have grown in recent years. How might we embrace this mindset in the Thanksgiving season?

  • A Forgiving Community - A Sermon on Matthew 18:21-35
    2026/10/08
We pray it every Sunday: "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." Whether we substitue words like "sins" or "debts," it's a reminder that we have all been there, on both sides of the equation. In Matthew 18:21-35, Jesus gives an even clearer and bolder answer to how we as a community of faith should forgive. The Rev. Dr. Michael Brooks reflects on the challenges of forgiving, and how the Gospel calls us to stretch our capacity to forgive. How can forgiveness help us and others through difficult times?
