George Hodges
Born in 1644, Penn grew up in a prominent English family but chose a very different path when he embraced the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as the Quakers. His beliefs brought him into conflict with authorities at a time when religious dissent could lead to imprisonment and persecution.
After receiving a royal charter for land in North America, Penn founded Pennsylvania as a colony where people of different Christian denominations could worship with greater freedom. He promoted representative government, legal protections, and principles of religious toleration that were unusually broad for his era.
