Tesla has unveiled its second-generation Roadster at a SpaceX test site near Waco, Texas, and it actually flies. Elon Musk demonstrated the car driving up a half-pipe ramp, hovering suspended using cold gas attitude thrusters, flipping over mid-air, landing, and then jumping an entire line of cars — all on a live stream that ran under 30 minutes. The Roadster also features a ground-suction system that pulls the car down to the road surface, giving it unprecedented cornering ability and allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 0.89 seconds. The same thrusters that enable flight can also fire rearward for additional forward acceleration. Musk has been publicly describing this cold gas pressure technology since as far back as 2016, yet the mainstream media largely ignored the event — The New York Times and Fox News both failed to feature the story on their homepages, and posts about the flying car were even being flagged as political on Reddit. Meanwhile, reactions split sharply: some celebrated the achievement with childlike wonder, calling it a generational milestone comparable to the Chicago World's Fair, while others immediately dismissed it as impractical or attacked Musk personally. The cultural divide over whether people are allowed to feel optimistic about the future — flying cars, reusable rockets caught by giant mechanical arms, Starlink, self-driving vehicles, AI — has become a flashpoint, with some arguing the media intentionally suppresses stories that could generate hope or excitement about technology and the future.
