They Received the Holy Spirit—Why Did They Still Need Water Baptism? | Capt. Rajesh Daniel

If someone has already believed in Jesus and received the Holy Spirit, why should they still receive water baptism?

In this Bible-based episode, Capt. Rajesh Daniel explores the remarkable experience of Cornelius and his household in Acts chapter 10.

Cornelius feared God, prayed regularly, and gave generously to those in need. Yet his good character, prayers, and generosity could not replace hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ. God instructed him to send for Peter, who proclaimed the death and resurrection of Jesus and declared:

“Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

While Peter was still preaching, the Holy Spirit came upon everyone who heard the message. The Jewish believers were astonished when they heard the Gentiles speaking in tongues and praising God.

Cornelius and his household received the Holy Spirit before receiving water baptism.

This proves that ordinary water is not the source of salvation or the Holy Spirit. They did not earn God’s gift by entering the water. God responded to their faith while they were hearing the gospel.

However, the story did not end there.

    Peter said:

“Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”

Acts 10:48 then says that Peter commanded them to be baptized.

If receiving the Holy Spirit made water baptism unnecessary, Peter could have said, “They already have everything; there is no reason to baptize them.” Instead, the evidence of the Holy Spirit removed every excuse for withholding water.

The Holy Spirit coming before baptism proves that water does not earn salvation. The command to baptize them afterward proves that grace does not cancel obedience.

This passage protects us from two errors:

The first says that water itself saves, even without personal repentance and faith.

The second says that because salvation comes through faith, believers may ignore the command of Jesus.

Cornelius teaches us that salvation is God’s gift, while baptism is the believer’s obedient response to that gift.

They did not enter the water hoping to persuade God to accept them. The Holy Spirit had already demonstrated that God had received them through faith in Jesus Christ. They entered the water because the Lord who received them had also commanded baptism.

Water baptism is not an attempt to purchase grace. It is a public testimony that grace has been received.

In Acts 10, the Father opened the door of salvation to the Gentiles. The Son provided forgiveness through His death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit came upon those who heard and believed.

According to Matthew 28:19, believers are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

    The Father receives us.

    The Son saves us.

    The Holy Spirit fills us.

The believer responds with faith and obedience.

Join Capt. Rajesh Daniel and discover why we must never use grace to reject obedience or water baptism to replace faith in Jesus Christ.

  • Baptized Into Fellowship: You Were Never Called to Walk Alone | Capt. Rajesh Daniel

Baptized Into Fellowship: You Were Never Called to Walk Alone | Capt. Rajesh Daniel

Water baptism is not merely a private declaration followed by an isolated Christian life. It marks the beginning of a shared life with the people of God.

In this Bible-based message, Capt. Rajesh Daniel explores the pattern of the early Church in Acts chapter 2.

After Peter proclaimed that Jesus Christ had died, risen from the dead, and been exalted as Lord, the people were deeply convicted and asked, “What shall we do?”

Peter answered, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you.”

    Acts 2:41 says:

“Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.”

    Notice the biblical order:

    They heard the gospel.
    They accepted the message.
    They were baptized.
They were added to the community of believers.

Baptism was not the conclusion of their Christian journey. It was the beginning of a devoted life with God’s people.

Acts 2:42 identifies four commitments that followed their baptism: the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer.

They remained under biblical teaching because baptism is not graduation from Christianity. A believer comes out of the water ready to learn, grow, receive correction, and be transformed by God’s Word.

They devoted themselves to fellowship because following Jesus also meant belonging to His people. First Peter 2:5 describes believers as living stones being built together into a spiritual house. A stone lying alone cannot become a house; it must be joined with other stones.

They broke bread together, remembering the sacrifice of Jesus and sharing their lives as one family.

They also devoted themselves to prayer. The baptized Church was a praying Church. They did not rely only upon organization, ability, or human strength. As they sought God together, signs and wonders occurred, needs were met, and the Lord added people to their number.

Many desire the power described in Acts while rejecting the fellowship that carried it. They want miracles without commitment, spiritual gifts without accountability, and personal revelation without biblical teaching.

Water baptism declares more than, “I have left my old life.”

It also declares, “I now belong to the family of God.”

The local church is not perfect because it consists of people who are still growing. There may be misunderstandings and disappointments requiring grace and forgiveness. Yet another person’s failure should not remove us from Christ’s design for fellowship.

A sheep separated from the flock becomes vulnerable. A burning coal removed from the fire soon grows cold. A living stone isolated from other stones cannot fulfil its purpose in the house.

Jesus commanded believers to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In the name of the Father, because He receives us into His household.

In the name of the Son, because His blood purchased the Church and made us one people.

In the name of the Holy Spirit, because He unites believers, distributes spiritual gifts, and empowers the Church.

Join Capt. Rajesh Daniel and discover why baptism should lead us into biblical teaching, fellowship, communion, prayer, service, and love.

  • When an Earlier Baptism Is Not Enough: The Revelation of Acts 19 | Capt. Rajesh Daniel
    2026/10/17

Can someone receive water baptism again? Acts chapter 19 provides an important biblical answer.

In this message, Capt. Rajesh Daniel examines Paul’s encounter with approximately twelve disciples in Ephesus. When Paul asked whether they had received the Holy Spirit, they replied that they had not even heard about the Holy Spirit.

Paul then asked, “What baptism did you receive?”

    They answered, “John’s baptism.”

These men had already entered water, but their understanding of the gospel was incomplete. John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance that prepared people for the coming Messiah. John instructed them to believe in the One coming after him—Jesus Christ.

After Paul explained the complete message, Acts 19:5 says:

“On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Paul did not say, “You have already touched water once, so nothing more is required.” When these disciples received a fuller revelation of Jesus Christ, they responded with baptism based on personal understanding and faith.

This teaches us that biblical baptism is not meaningful merely because water was involved. It must be connected with personal repentance, faith in Jesus Christ, an understanding of the gospel, and a willing decision to become His disciple.

Someone may have participated in a religious ceremony as an infant, followed a family tradition, joined a church, or entered water without understanding its meaning. The biblical question is not simply, “Have you ever participated in a water ceremony?”

    The question is:

“After hearing the gospel, did you personally repent, believe in Jesus Christ, and choose to follow Him?”

The Ephesian disciples were sincere, but sincerity could not replace complete revelation. When greater understanding came, they did not defend their previous experience. They humbled themselves and obeyed the truth.

Their story also reveals the work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Father sent His Son for our salvation.

Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose again, and became the centre of their faith.

The Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

This passage does not teach that believers should repeatedly receive baptism whenever they feel spiritually weak or commit a sin. However, it shows that an earlier religious washing without personal faith or proper understanding of Jesus should not prevent someone from receiving biblical believer’s baptism.

Your parents cannot believe for you. Your pastor cannot repent for you. Your church cannot surrender your life on your behalf. You must personally confess Jesus Christ as the Son of God and your Lord.

Matthew 28:19 commands believers to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

In the name of the Father, who planned salvation and receives us into His family.

In the name of the Son, who accomplished salvation through His death and resurrection.

In the name of the Holy Spirit, who transforms our hearts and empowers us to live as witnesses.

Join Capt. Rajesh Daniel for this important revelation and examine your baptism in the light of Scripture—not merely tradition.
