It’s one of the most difficult stories in the Bible, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. You probably know the story of Abraham and Isaac as an example of sacrifice. You may have been asked “Would you sacrifice your Isaac for God?” to show your love, devotion or praise. But it’s really a story about trust.

Digging into context and common practices of the gods at the time will help you see this story of a father and son as foreshadowing to the life of Jesus. If you’ve struggled with a God who uses the pain of people as an ego boost, you’ll find healing in the true message of the one who sacrificed more than he’ll ever ask of us. Because Genesis 22 is really about a father who provides.
