While ambient urban pollution, like Delhi's winter smog, dominates mainstream news, this interview establishes a dramatic, counterintuitive fact: a woman cooking with biomass in a rural kitchen is exposed to PM 2.5 levels that can be as high as 600 µg/m³ (micrograms/cubic metre), roughly 10 times higher than average urban exposures.
Energy equity demands that the poorest populations receive the exact same air quality and health benchmarks as anyone else. Finding the funding for universal LPG access, rather than finding justifications to delay it, is both a public health imperative and an economic necessity. Drawing on 33 years of field research, Dr Balakrishnan provides a rigorous, evidence-based assessment of household air pollution and the public health impacts of solid fuel combustion across India. Dr Balakrishnan outlines research demonstrating that every rupee invested in providing LPG cooking gas to low-income households yields an estimated 15 to 30 rupees in economic return through avoided mortality, reduced healthcare costs, and carbon emission mitigation.
She shares first-hand experience and empirical findings that dispel common misconceptions regarding rural fuel preferences, showing that rural women eagerly adopt cleaner cooking fuel. But clean fuel adoption is governed strictly by economic price points rather than cultural behaviour. The interview also details the systemic health impacts of particulate exposure - from foetal growth restriction and stunting to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases - while also presenting strategic recommendations to integrate universal LPG attainment targets directly into the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
