Why does Leviticus contain sacrifices, priests, blood, altar fire, clean and unclean animals—and what does any of it have to do with Jesus?
In this episode of Reading & Reflection, Kyle walks through Leviticus chapters 1–11 and explores one of the central questions behind the book:
How can sinful people live near a holy God?
Leviticus can feel difficult and unfamiliar, but beneath the sacrifices and laws is a powerful picture of holiness,
atonement, priesthood, worship, obedience, cleansing, and access to God. Pasted markdown
We’ll look at:
- The burnt, grain, fellowship, sin, and guilt offerings
- Why restitution mattered when someone had been wronged
- The continual fire on the altar
- The ordination of Aaron and his sons
- The glory of God appearing before Israel
- Nadab and Abihu and the danger of treating God casually
- Clean and unclean animals
- Why Israel’s food laws were connected to holiness
- How Leviticus helps Christians better understand Jesus
The sacrifices of Leviticus had to be offered again and again. Priests served generation after generation. But the New Testament points Christians toward something greater: Jesus as the final sacrifice and eternal High Priest. Pasted markdown
Leviticus gives us the categories:
Sacrifice.
Atonement.
Priesthood.
Holiness.
Access to God.
And those ideas help us understand more clearly what Christ accomplished.
If you have ever struggled to read Leviticus, wondered why God required sacrifices, questioned the clean and unclean food laws, or wanted to understand how the Old Testament connects to Jesus, this episode is for you.
Leviticus is not simply a collection of strange ancient rules.
It shows us a holy God making a way for imperfect people to live in His presence.
