A command can be good and still feel like bad news when it finally tells the truth about us. That’s the tension we walk straight into as we continue our Guilty to Glory series through Romans, focusing on Romans 7:7-13. Paul asks what many people secretly wonder: is God’s Law the problem? We slow down and listen to his answer, “Certainly not,” then trace what the Law is actually doing in the life of a sinner and in the life of a Christian.

Along the way, we zoom out to the world Paul’s first readers knew: 613 commandments as counted by later Jewish tradition, plus layers of interpretations that turned obedience into an exhausting way of life. We connect that burden to Peter’s words about an unbearable yoke, then to the sobering warnings of Deuteronomy 27 and 28, where blessing and curse reveal the stakes of disobedience. We also follow the New Testament thread in Galatians 3 and James 2:10, showing why “works of the law” can never justify anyone before God, and why the righteous live by faith.

Then we come back to Paul’s personal angle in Romans 7 and his example of coveting. “You shall not covet” reaches past appearances and targets the inner life, reminding us the real fight with sin lives in the heart and mind. We talk about why behavior management is not the same as transformation, and why only the Holy Spirit can create a clean heart that trusts Christ’s righteousness rather than our own effort.
