If every important decision, problem or piece of knowledge still has to come through the owner, the business may have grown without becoming less dependent on the owner.

Owner dependency can show up in many ways:
• every unusual decision needs the owner;
• customer problems keep escalating upward;
• important knowledge exists in one person's head;
• managers cannot act without checking;
• the business slows down when one person is away;
• the same problems keep being solved rather than removed.
The answer is not more heroics.
Build capability. Share knowledge. Create backups. Clarify authority. Develop managers. Put useful management rhythms in place. And when a recurring problem appears, ask why it needed the same person again.
A useful test is: if you disappeared for four weeks, what would actually stop?
That list is a map of organisational dependence.
