Why Do We Always Feel Like It’s Too Late?

The Psychology of Regret, Comparison, and the Fear of Falling Behind

I hope that wherever you are listening to my voice, your heart is at peace.

If you've been thinking about your past lately... if you sometimes catch yourself saying, "I wish I had started sooner," "I wish I hadn't made that decision," or "I think it's already too late for me," I want you to know that you are not alone.

I'm truly grateful to have you with me once again.

Today, we're not going to talk about success.

We're not here to encourage anyone to work harder or run faster.

Instead, we're going to explore one of the quietest, yet heaviest emotions a person can experience. It's an emotion that rarely speaks out loud, yet it can shape our lives for years.

The feeling that it's too late.

Let me begin with a question.

Have you ever looked through someone's social media profile and suddenly felt as if you've fallen behind in life?

Someone bought a house.

Someone got married.

Someone moved to another country.

Someone started their own business.

And at that very moment, your mind quietly begins to speak.

"Look... everyone is ahead of you."

"You've wasted your time."

"If only you had made a different decision a few years ago, your life would be completely different today."

What's interesting is that just a few minutes earlier, you may have felt perfectly content with your own life.

Then suddenly, everything changes.

What actually happened?

Did your life become worse within those few minutes?

No.

The only thing that changed was the story your mind started telling about your life.

Psychologists have spent decades studying a phenomenon known as social comparison.

From childhood, human beings naturally compare themselves with others.

Originally, this ability evolved to help us learn. By observing others, we acquire new skills, recognize potential dangers, and understand where we fit within a community.

But when comparison loses its balance, it can become one of the greatest sources of emotional suffering.

The problem doesn't begin with comparison itself.

The problem begins when we mistake comparison for self-worth.

Little by little, the mind starts sending us a dangerous message:

"If I'm behind other people, then I must be less valuable."

Yet there is no scientific evidence to support that conclusion.

Take a moment to look at real life.

Are we all born into the same family?

Do we all grow up with the same opportunities?

Do we all enjoy the same physical health, financial resources, family support, or life circumstances?

The answer is obvious.

No.

So how can we possibly compare the lives of people who started from completely different places?

It's like expecting an apple tree to grow at exactly the same pace as a pine tree.

Each has its own season.

Yet our minds tend to forget that.

They see only the outcome.

Not the journey.

Not the struggle.

Not the years that remain invisible.

The mind has another habit.

Whenever it doesn't know the whole story, it quietly fills in the missing pieces on its own.

For example, we see a picture of someone's success.

Without even realizing it, our minds assume that they have always been happy.

That they have always been successful.

That they have always been confident.

But the truth is, we've only seen a few seconds of their life.

We never saw the nights they felt hopeless.

We never saw the failures they had to endure.

We never saw the fears they kept hidden.

Most of us compare the backstage of our own lives with someone else's highlight reel.

And in a comparison like that, it's only natural to feel that we're falling short.

But the feeling that it's too late doesn't come only from comparison.

Sometimes, it comes from regret.

Regret is one of the most complex emotions we experience as human beings.

Because unlike sadness, it isn't simply about something we've lost.

It's about something we believe could have been different.
