Why are we so afraid of aging?
From anti-aging products and beauty standards to the discomfort we feel when our bodies change, our culture often treats aging as something to hide, fix, or overcome. But what if aging isn't the problem? What if our fear of aging is?
In this Weekly Dispatch, we explore what it means to age with dignity, honesty, and compassion. We look at the relationship between aging and body image, the cultural pressure to remain young, and the grief that can accompany changes in our bodies, abilities, and independence.
We'll also explore the idea of eldering: understanding growing older not simply as decline, but as a meaningful stage of life involving wisdom, adaptation, interdependence, connection, and continued participation.
And because aging inevitably brings us closer to questions about mortality, we'll consider what our fear of aging can teach us about our fear of death, our relationship with our bodies, and the choices we want to make about care and the end of life.
In this episode, we explore:
• Why we're so afraid of aging
• Aging and body image
• Anti-aging culture and beauty standards
• What it means to elder well
• Aging, disability, grief, and changing abilities
• How to support older adults without taking away their autonomy
• Aging, mortality, and the fear of death
• Dignity, agency, and end-of-life choices
Aging isn't a problem to solve. It's a passage to inhabit.
The question is not how to avoid growing older. It's how we can meet aging with more honesty, compassion, dignity, and connection.
The horror movie Sam mentioned that speaks to this is "The Substance" from 2024.
