In this message given at a Bible conference in 2017, Bill Prost considers the beautiful balance found in Hebrews 13 and 1 Peter 5 between those who follow and those who lead among the people of God.
What happens when younger believers see inconsistency or failure in those they have looked up to? Hebrews 13:7 does not tell us to follow their failures, but to “follow their faith.” At the same time, those who have responsibility among the Lord’s people are reminded that spiritual influence is not established merely by what is said, but by a godly walk that gives weight to those words.
Drawing from Hebrews 13:7,17, Matthew 23, and 1 Peter 5, Bill points us away from putting brethren between ourselves and the Lord and back to Christ Himself—the only One in whom absolute perfection is found.
A helpful word for younger and older alike: the truth of God does not change because men fail, but that truth is most powerfully commended when it is lived.
