  • Keeping the Lights On in a Digital World
    2026/09/15

⚡ What does cybersecurity have to do with keeping the lights on? More than you might think.

In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month this October, we’re taking you behind the scenes at Wheatland Electric for a conversation about the digital—and physical—defenses helping protect the cooperative, our members, and the electric system we all depend on.

In this episode of Who’s on the Line?, we sit down with Jevin Kasselman, WEC’s director of information technology, who has spent nearly three decades watching technology—and the threats surrounding it—evolve.

From ransomware and artificial intelligence to data backups and around-the-clock monitoring of remote substations, Jevin explains why cybersecurity has become an increasingly important part of delivering reliable electricity. He also shares how WEC prepares for threats before they happen and why, when it comes to cyberattacks, his philosophy is “not a matter of if, but when.”

Plus, Jevin shares practical advice members can use to better protect themselves online—including one password mistake he says you should avoid.
