概要
So, is Doug Ford finally becoming politically vulnerable? Or will the opposition once again struggle to turn government controversies into electoral opportunity?
This week on On the Ledge — Your Ontario Politics Podcast, Dave Trafford is joined by veteran Queen's Park journalist Keith Leslie, former Canadian Press Bureau Chief, and Steve Cornwell of The Trillium.
The Ontario Liberal leadership race is approaching its finish line, but the candidates are having a tough time capturing public attention. The panel considers whether the Liberals have the ideas, leadership and political strategy to take on Doug Ford — particularly with the next provincial election potentially as far away as 2030.
Then there's the money.
Ontario's projected deficit has increased by $3 billion, provincial debt has surpassed $500 billion, and the government is setting aside additional contingency funding as the threat of new American tariffs hangs over the auto and steel industries. How long can the Ford government continue to present itself as fiscally responsible?
But the biggest accountability questions may be emerging in the OSAP controversy.
Reports of questionable student assistance applications involving private career colleges, warnings that may have gone unheeded, and uncertainty surrounding the release of a KPMG audit are putting the government on the defensive.
And while Queen's Park attempts to tighten the rules, legitimate students are being caught in the middle, with some facing uncertainty about their ability to pay tuition, cover rent or continue their education.
The panel also digs into the province's increasingly strained relationships with municipalities, including Toronto's financial deal, regional governance and the growing pressure on local infrastructure.
And finally, is Ontario headed for another teachers' strike?
With labour negotiations unresolved, strike votes underway and the government facing significant public disapproval on education, the political stakes could be considerable.
On the Ledge takes you inside the politics, the policy and the personalities shaping Ontario — with informed analysis, sharp opinions and a healthy dose of skepticism.
