  • What's Under the Patient Matters: Understanding Mattresses & Support Surfaces
    2026/09/27

    Send us Fan Mail

Families spend a lot of time thinking about the hospital bed.

But sometimes the more important question is:

What's actually on top of the bed?

A mattress isn't just a mattress when someone spends significant time in bed.

    1. Not all support surfaces are the same

Break it down in everyday language:

    • Standard hospital-bed mattresses
    • Foam/redistribution surfaces
    • Gel or specialty surfaces
    • Alternating-pressure surfaces
    • Low-air-loss systems
    • Combination surfaces
    • Bariatric options

    2. What does the pump actually do?

Pressure settings • Alternating cycles • Low-air-loss functions • Static modes • Alarm indicators • CPR functions • Hose connections • Power interruption

What happens when somebody changes a setting without understanding what it does?

    3. The stories are endless

Families who didn't realize the pump wasn't operating correctly.

A mattress paired with the wrong pump.

    A hose disconnected or kinked.

    A setting changed accidentally.

    A patient bottoming out.

Equipment functioning differently than the caregiver expected.

    4. The surface doesn't replace patient care

    Important distinction:

A specialty support surface can be part of a pressure-injury prevention or treatment plan, but it doesn't replace repositioning, skin assessment, nutrition, moisture management or the patient's clinical care plan.

    5. Ask questions before—and after—the equipment arrives

    Families and caregivers should understand:

    Why was this surface selected?
What is it supposed to do?
How should it feel when operating?
    What settings should I understand?
What alarms should I watch for?
Who do I call if something doesn't seem right?

  • You Have the Hospital Bed—But Do You Know How to Use It?
    2026/09/27

    Send us Fan Mail

    1. A hospital bed is more than a place to sleep

Talk about the different functions families may have available:

    • Head elevation
    • Knee/leg positioning
    • Overall bed height
    • Hi-low functions
    • Trendelenburg/reverse Trendelenburg when the particular bed provides those functions and their use is clinically appropriate
    • Rails and assist devices
    • Different bed widths and weight capacities

    2. Positioning can change the caregiving experience

Discuss how appropriate positioning can help with:

    • Getting in and out of bed
    • Repositioning
    • Caregiver body mechanics
    • Personal care and brief changes
    • Meals and activities in bed
    • Comfort and rest
    • Transfers
    • Reducing unnecessary bending and lifting by caregivers

    3. The functions families don't know they have

"We've walked into homes where families have had the equipment for weeks or months and didn't know it could do different positions etc.

    4. One bed does NOT fit everybody

Patient's condition and caregiver situation matter when selecting equipment:

Mobility • Transfers • Fall risk • Cognition • Body size • Positioning needs • Caregiver ability • Room layout

    5. Delivery shouldn't be the end of the service

Equipment + education = better use of the equipment.

Families should know what was delivered, how it functions, basic safety considerations, and who to call when something doesn't seem right.
