There are moments when a society has to decide what it is willing to trust.
Not whom it is willing to worship.
Not which political party it prefers.
Not which television commentator speaks most persuasively.
The question is far more fundamental:
What evidence are we willing to examine?
What happens when evidence contradicts what powerful people want us to believe?
What happens when scientists discover something inconvenient?
What happens when government agencies responsible for protecting public health become places where scientific findings and political priorities collide?
And perhaps the most important question of all:
What happens to ordinary human beings when we get these decisions wrong?
