What happens when a pastor’s church is thriving but his marriage is quietly falling apart?
In Part 1 of this three-part conversation, Brad Rhoads talks with Justin and Trisha Davis, founders of Refine Us Ministries. They tell the story behind their ministry: marrying young, planting a church that grew to more than 800 people, and the cracks that were forming underneath. Justin talks honestly about putting giftedness ahead of character, and about the day he came home from church and told Trisha he was done and was having an affair with her best friend. Trisha shares how rock bottom became the place where she found her identity as a child of God.
It’s an honest look at how marriages drift into crisis and what it takes to start telling the truth.

🔑 KEY IDEAS:
- Giftedness and character don’t automatically grow at the same rate. Leaders have to develop both on purpose.
- Ministry, work, or success can become a rival that takes the love and attention a marriage needs.
- When we feel we’ve given more than we’ve received, entitlement grows, and no spouse can ever “repay” the debt we think we’re owed.
- A theology of “do everything right and God will bless it” sets couples up for disillusionment when life breaks down.
- An identity built on a role, a title, or a spouse can be taken away. An identity as a child of God can’t.
- “Rock bottom is still a solid surface to stand.” God meets us in the collapse.
- Healing after betrayal often starts when the offending spouse stops resisting help, including counseling.
- A confession made from resignation is different from one made from repentance.
- People heal from betrayal differently. Some want details and some don’t, but more detail doesn’t change “the pit.”
- Information that feels withheld can undo rebuilt trust even when it isn’t new information.
- Unconfessed sin tends to lead to repeated behavior, so full honesty is necessary for full healing.
- Real repentance means understanding how much damage was done. The goal isn’t condemnation but turning away from what you’ve done.
📚 KEY VERSES:
📖 Romans 8:1 - "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,"
