  • #41 Reading FC in the Premier League (part two) with Sam Michael and Johnny Hunt
    2024/05/14

Host Carl Jones is joined by comedian and host of Comedians Talking About Football, Sam Michael and Royals superfan and terrace cult hero Johnny Hunt to continue the count up the all-time Premier League table as we reach 43rd place and Reading FC.

In this second episode, we cover Reading's second spell in the top flight, the near miss of a return in 2017 and the intervening years that have seen the club fall to the brink of extinction thanks to the disastrous ownership of Dai Yongge.

There's an emotional call to arms from both guests and a plea to the wider footballing world not to take for granted that it might never happen to them. We also remember Eamonn Dolan, a key factor in The Royals' success over the years, as well as looking back on some of the wildest results of any club in recent seasons, with a 7-5, 7-4 and 6-4 defeat to chew over.

We'll also put a chaotic Premier League Reading XI into the archives, it's more slim pickings for the Premier League's greatest Burundian of all-time and we end on a Royals-themed round of Play Your Apps Right that gets predictably heated.

    2024/05/13

Host Carl Jones is joined by comedian and host of Comedians Talking About Football, Sam Michael and Royals superfan and terrace cult hero Johnny Hunt to continue the count up the all-time Premier League table as we reach 43rd place and Reading FC.

In this first episode of a packed double-header, we take a dip into the archives for a potted history of The Royals before covering how Sir John Madejski built a stadium in his own name that would eventually see a record-breaking Steve Coppell side rise to the top flight for the first time in the Berkshire club's history.

A fantastic first season sees Reading pushing for the European spots before second season syndrome kicked in and they returned to the Championship - we cover where the lads think it went wrong.

Make sure you subscribe for part two where we cover the second spell in the top flight and the reign of Dai Yongge among other things.

  • #39 Desert Island Matches with comedian Jack Campbell
    2024/04/28

Today's guest is former English Comedian of the Year Jack Campbell choosing the unforgettable matches he'd take with him to a desert island.

Jack shares his memorable games - and there are quite a lot of them - and mixes in plenty of trivia he's picked up along the way, including his favorite team with a blue and white zebra on the logo, why not having a 'favourite' football team is perfectly suited to the way he consumes football and why Keiron Dyer and Lee Bowyer having a full-on scrap is up there with his favourite footballing memories.

We also reveal who the greatest Chilean to earn a place in our Premier League of Nations Hall of Fame is based on your votes! Spoiler alert: you didn't go for an obvious pick...

  • #38 What If Southgate Got Subbed? Desert Island Matches with author James Green
    2024/04/23

Today's guest is author and comedian James Green choosing the desert island matches with a difference that he'd rewrite the history of. James' new book, What If Southgate Got Subbed?, is a great mix of fiction and non-fiction as James relives some of football's most memorable moments of the modern era and then reimagines them with a new ending - including what might have happened had Terry Venables introduced fresh legs for his Aston Villa defender back at Euro '96.

Among the other games we relive, find out what might have happened had Eric Cantona had a quiet chat with the abusive fan in the stand, or if Steven Gerrard hadn't slipped at the crucial moment. We explore two unforgettable Champions League final comebacks, spoil Jamie Vardy's party and teach Paul Alcock karate among other famous moments where things could have been quite different...

There's also a welcome return for Premier League of Nations as the greatest Chilean goes into our Hall of Fame - but will it be Bravo, Beausejour, Medel or Sanchez? You can pick up a copy of James' book here: https://amzn.eu/d/3UsfCgD

  • #36 Extra Time with Jason Lee chatting Forest in Europe, Fantasy Football and EDI in the modern game
    2024/04/08

Host Carl Jones is joined by former Nottingham Forest striker Jason Lee to discuss his career in football and his spell in the Premier League.

From working his way up the league ladder to playing in Europe for Nottingham Forest by his early-20s, things took a turn for the sinister when Baddiel and Skinner's infamous Fantasy Football sketch made him one of the most recognisable faces in the Premier League for a short period in the 90s.

From there, we cover the indirect impact of that sketch on his career, his most memorable moments including winning promotion and moving north of the border, and discuss his current role working in EDI and why it's so important for the modern game to keep up with the times.

In the first episode of season three, host Carl Jones is joined by Sky Sports presenter and Everton fan Jules Warren to find out which matches he'd take with him to a desert island.

From remembering the glory days of his childhood as the Toffees dominated English football to the present day where things aren't quite so rosy, Jules recalls some of his favourite memories at Goodison Park, the Everton legend he'd choose to rescue him from his desert island and the playoff final he'd relive, accompanied by one of English football's biggest personalities.

  • #34 Extra Time with Clive Tyldesley - Part Two
    2023/11/27

In this second part of the interview (and the final episode of this series!), host Carl Jones is joined once again by the voice of ITV football for almost two decades - a job in which he called some of the biggest moments in domestic, European and international football - the incomparable Clive Tyldesley.

Picking up where we left off last week, we chat about international tournaments and which host nation proved to be his most memorable trip away. We discuss how football and society are intertwined, for better and for worse, and we cover what it's like to be in the commentary box describing a dismal England exit from a major tournament - especially when it means you've got to call the position of your great friend, the England manager Roy Hodgson, untenable.

Clive shares the only time he ever asked a manager if he'd still be in a job by the following weekend, and why he never asked that question again. And he gives insight into what being the voice of the FIFA video games series was like and how it led to the most unlikely moments of being recognised by his distinctive voice.

All of that and much more in a superb end to season two of When Football Began Again.

     CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE
