In a biblical context, to be anointed is to be blessed, set apart for God's service, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Throughout Scripture, prophets, priests, and kings were literally anointed with oil as a visible sign that God had chosen and commissioned them for His purposes. Today, however, the biblical understanding of the anointing is in danger of being diminished or misunderstood. What Scripture presents as God's empowering presence and divine calling is sometimes reduced to a mere emotional experience, a title, or a religious expression. The anointing is far more than symbolism—it is God's enabling power to accomplish His will.

Some key biblical examples include:

  • Kings: Saul and David were anointed by the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 10:1; 16:13).
  • Priests: Aaron and his sons were anointed for priestly service (Exodus 28:41; 30:30).
  • Prophets: Elijah was instructed to anoint Elisha as his successor (1 Kings 19:16).
  • Jesus: Jesus is called the Messiah (Hebrew) and the Christ (Greek), both of which mean "the Anointed One." He was anointed by the Holy Spirit for His ministry (Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38).
