Church attendance is declining, more Americans are identifying as religiously unaffiliated (the so-called “nones”), and Christianity has become increasingly divided by politics. But is the American church disappearing, or is it becoming something different?
In this episode of Holy Uncertain, hosts Lauren Ranzino and Chris McLeod are joined by award-winning documentary filmmaker Martin Doblmeier, founder of Journey Films and director of the new PBS documentary series Christianity at a Crossroads, to explore the major changes taking place within Christianity in America.
Drawing from more than four decades of documenting faith and religion, Martin shares what he's learned about why people are leaving churches, how political divisions and religious harm have shaped the American Christian experience, and where unexpected signs of growth and renewal are emerging.
From thriving immigrant congregations to new models of church community, they explore how Christianity is changing and what it might take for churches to move beyond preserving institutions toward creating places of genuine belonging and connection.
As younger generations rethink their relationship with organized religion, what might the future of the American church look like? And what parts of Christianity are worth holding onto as the church continues to change?
