What if the things you think are ordinary about your life are exactly what make you extraordinary?
In this month's episode of Art of Purpose, Kenny sits down with Ricardo Echeverria, partner at Shernoff Bidart Echeverria LLP. Ricardo is one of the most respected trial attorneys in the country, a CAALA Hall of Fame inductee, a member of the invitation-only Inner Circle of Advocates, and a multiple-time Trial Lawyer of the Year.
But before the trials and verdicts, there was the dairy farm. Ricardo grew up working alongside his immigrant parents on their family dairy farm, first in Corona and then in Chino.
He was supposed to come home from studying at Cal Poly and run a dairy of his own. Instead, he made one of the hardest phone calls of his life and told his parents he was going to law school.
In this conversation, Ricardo shares how his father left Spain at 17 with nothing and built a dairy farm alongside his brothers, and how both of his parents shaped the work ethic and attention to detail he still relies on as a trial attorney today. He opens up about the phone call where he told his father he wasn't coming home to run the dairy. That call ended with a surprising second phone call that changed everything.
Ricardo also talks about winning a $1.8 million verdict at 27, losing his next seven trials, and why he believes you have to hate losing without ever being afraid of it. He explains why trying a case is a lot like directing a movie, and why he goes out of his way to make jurors who speak English as a second language feel valued. And he shares the story of a young boy named Dylan, along with the reason his favorite part of any trial will always be what the result means for his client and their loved ones.
This conversation is about more than becoming an attorney. It's about family, humility, grit, and the truth that the life you've lived may be preparing you to change someone else's life.
He calls his lifetime achievement award a "halftime" award. Tune in to find out why he's just getting started.
