What Wildlife Taught Me About People
Spending time photographing wildlife has taught me a lot about photography. But it has also taught me something I didn't expect: quite a lot about people.
Wildlife doesn't follow a script. You can't tell an elephant where to stand, ask a lion to wait for better light, or persuade a bird to do something interesting just because you've got your camera ready.
You have to watch. You have to wait. You have to notice the small changes in behaviour. You have to anticipate what might happen — and accept that you can't control the outcome.
And surprisingly, those same skills can be useful when dealing with people.
In this episode, Graham Elliott reflects on some of the lessons wildlife photography has taught him about observation, patience, anticipation, adapting to circumstances and knowing when not to act.
This isn't a photography tutorial. Instead, it's a personal look at what happens when you spend enough time watching wildlife to realise that some of the things you learn in the field have very little to do with cameras.
Perhaps the biggest lesson is a simple one:
If you want to understand something, you have to spend a little more time watching it.
It's time for another podcast...
