Nobody films this part. And this part is most of it. Van life content is real estate photography for a lifestyle — the made bed, the ocean out the back doors, the best ninety seconds of a life sold as the life. So here's the rest of the photo. The spots that are hard to win and the twenty-odd nights that photograph like nothing. The frost on the inside of the glass, and the maintenance that never fully stops, because out here you don't call someone, you are the someone. And underneath it, the bigger thing the genre sells: that freedom is a location. It isn't. Whatever's going on in you gets in the van with you. What's left when you stop selling it is quieter and smaller than the pitch, and better in the ways that don't photograph.
