What are Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, and Psalms actually about?

In this Sunday School lesson, we review the content and major themes of five important Old Testament books: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, and Psalms.

The goal is simple: to know the Biblical books well enough that when you hear one mentioned, you immediately understand where it fits in Biblical history and what its major message is.

We review:

• Joshua — the conquest of the Promised Land, the division of the land among the tribes, covenant renewal, and the major events involving Joshua, Rahab, Achan, Caleb, and Jericho.

• Judges — Israel's repeated cycles of sin, oppression, crying out to God, and deliverance through the judges, along with the book's emphasis that Israel needed a faithful king.

• Ruth — Ruth's faithfulness, Boaz as kinsman-redeemer, Naomi, Bethlehem, Ruth's Moabite background, and the connection of Ruth to David's family.

• 1 & 2 Samuel — Hannah and Samuel, Saul and David, David's anointing, David and Goliath, the establishment of the Davidic kingdom, and the Biblical theme of God's people being blessed under God's chosen king.

• Psalms — the historical circumstances behind the Psalms, their various authors, worship, praise, thanksgiving, lament, distress, God's character and deeds, and the importance of understanding each Psalm in its Biblical and historical context.

Throughout the lesson, we also consider how these Old Testament books contribute to the larger Biblical story and point us toward Christ and the gospel. The lesson especially highlights the Biblical theme of the king who fights for and delivers God's people.

This lesson is designed for anyone who wants to understand the Bible better, especially Presbyterian and Reformed Christians, Bible-believing Christians, and anyone interested in Biblical interpretation and understanding the Old Testament in its historical and theological context.

What are Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy about?

In this Old Testament review, we look at the purpose, structure, and major content of these three books of the Bible and review what we have learned about them.

As we move through the Old Testament, it is important not only to know the names of the books but to understand why each book was written and what its major themes and contents are. In this lesson, we review:

Leviticus — the ceremonial law, sacrifices, priests, worship, cleanliness, holy living, vows, and the covenant blessings and curses. We also consider how the sacrificial system points forward to Jesus Christ and His once-for-all sacrifice.

Numbers — the first and second generations of Israel, the censuses, Israel's organization and wilderness journey, the twelve spies, Balaam, the preservation of God's people, and preparation to enter the Promised Land.

Deuteronomy — Moses' final words to Israel, the review and renewal of the covenant, the repetition of God's law, covenant blessings and curses, the transfer of leadership to Joshua, and the death of Moses.

This lesson is especially useful for Christians who want to understand the Old Testament, Biblical interpretation, the structure of the Bible, and how its books fit together. It is also part of our larger review of the Old Testament as we prepare to move into the New Testament.

Why do some Bible-believing Christians baptize their children—even before those children have professed faith in Jesus?

If you're a Baptist, this practice may seem strange, especially if you've always understood baptism as something that follows personal faith in Christ. I understand that perspective because I once held it myself.

In this lesson, John Musgrave explains why Presbyterians and other Reformation-minded Christians practice infant baptism, and why they believe it is Biblical—not because baptism saves a child, but because they understand baptism as a covenant sign that can be given to the children of believers.

This video is especially intended to help Baptists understand why Bible-believing Presbyterians and Reformed Christians baptize their children. It is also intended to help Presbyterians and Reformed Christians better understand and graciously explain their own practice when talking with Baptist brothers and sisters.

We will consider the relationship between circumcision and baptism, God's covenant promises to believers and their children, the significance of Acts 2, Colossians 2, and the Biblical distinction between receiving the covenant sign and possessing saving faith.

Infant baptism does not mean that a child is automatically saved. Saving faith in Jesus Christ is necessary. The question is what baptism signifies and to whom God has given the covenant sign.

John grew up in theologically liberal Presbyterianism, came to faith in Christ as a young man, spent time in charismatic theology, and later became Baptist before eventually becoming a Bible-believing Presbyterian. So this is not an argument against Baptists from someone who has never understood the Baptist position. It is an invitation to understand why fellow Christians who believe the Bible come to a different conclusion about baptism.

My hope is that Baptists will better understand their Presbyterian and Reformed brothers and sisters—and that Presbyterians and Reformed Christians will be better equipped to discuss this difference with Baptists in a gracious, patient, and loving way.
