What do Christians actually mean when they say “I think I’m called to ministry”? In this episode of the Dulin Weekly Podcast, Pastor James Henry of Dulin United Methodist Church in Falls Church, Virginia, draws on his work as a mentor to people discerning a call to ordained ministry. He explores what call really is and what it isn’t.

James challenges the idea that call has to be a dramatic voice, a burning bush, or an instant certainty. He shares how he first sensed his own call at age 15, after preaching on a Scout Sunday, when others in the congregation named it before he did. Call, he suggests, unfolds through relationship, circumstance, gift, need, and time.

He also makes the case that ordination is a call but not the definition of call. Teachers, parents, nurses, neighbors, artists, and retirees are all called to live out the wholeness God is creating in them. James offers a simple framework: call emerges where gift meets need through love and becomes a response. He explains why call is discerned in community and walks through how the United Methodist discernment process works, from the staff parish relations committee to the charge conference to the district committee on ministry.

The episode closes with a question you can carry into your own life: What is mine to love here, where I am?

This reflection fits anyone exploring vocation, discernment, Christian calling, ordained ministry, or the question of how to make a difference in the world. It is part of a weekly series from a United Methodist community on faith, grace, and everyday discipleship.
