Joshua breaks down why loving an LGBTQ person and knowing how to support them are not automatically the same thing, how supposedly harmless language can contribute to a larger culture of homophobia, and why real allyship requires your values to remain consistent whether or not somebody from that community is standing beside you.

We also get practical about how to be a better LGBTQ ally: how to challenge homophobic jokes without giving a twenty-minute lecture, how to ask questions that encourage people to examine their assumptions, when to correct someone privately, when stronger boundaries are necessary, and what questions you should ask the LGBTQ people in your own life about the kind of support they actually want.

If something would feel wrong to say with your queer friend sitting beside you, their absence probably doesn’t suddenly make it harmless.
