What does it really mean to love one another, and how do we actually do it in everyday life? Drawing from 1 John 2, this message explores one of the most repeated and most challenging commands in all of Scripture. The command to love is not new. It goes back to Leviticus 19 and was restated by Jesus in John 13, but in Christ it carries a new power because it is made possible through the Holy Spirit living inside every true believer.
Topics covered include: the difference between old and new in the command to love, why love is central to the gospel and not separate from it, what genuinely changes when someone comes to faith in Jesus, how to know if you are walking in the light or in darkness, the four characteristics of someone living in hatred and spiritual darkness, what it looks like to truly abide in the light, why right doctrine and moral uprightness are not enough on their own, and how failing to love other believers affects your fellowship with God.
First John 2 gives both a negative and a positive test. Hatred toward a fellow believer reveals darkness, no matter how much Bible knowledge someone has. Genuine love toward other believers proves that someone has truly been transferred into the light. The person who has been forgiven much is called to forgive much, and the way we love one another is itself a proclamation of the gospel.
If you have been wrestling with resentment, coldness, or broken relationships with other believers, this message offers both honest challenge and real hope. The Holy Spirit in you makes this kind of love possible, even when it does not come naturally.
Love God. Love Others. Live It Out
