  • 020 - Fated Mates and Christian Theology
    2025/06/21

In this heartfelt and thought-provoking episode of Weatherford Daze, Rachel surprises Jason with a deep dive into one of the most controversial romance tropes in literature and theology: fated mates. What starts as a discussion about soulmates in fantasy and romance novels soon turns into a rich conversation about Christian theology, free will, Calvinism vs. Arminianism, and what it means to choose love—in both relationships and faith.

    We unpack:

    • The trope of "fated mates" and where it shows up in fiction (yes, even Twilight)
    • How it parallels (or conflicts with) Christian beliefs about predestination
    • Whether God "chooses" our spouses or we do
    • Real-world relationship wisdom for choosing a godly mate
    • How theological ideas like free will, apostasy, and grace affect how we view faith and relationships
    • The balance between God's sovereignty and human responsibility

Whether you're a believer, a fan of clean romance, or just love big questions, this episode blends theology, humor, and personal experience in a way that only Rachel and Jason can.

The Alpha and the Beta by Geralyn Beauchamp

    Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

  • 018 - When an Author Breaks Our Trust (Originally Aired Jun 7, 2025)
    2025/06/15

What happens when a beloved book suddenly breaks the rules of its own world? In this episode of Weatherford Daze, Jason and Rachel dive deep into the concept of suspension of disbelief—how fiction invites us to trust the storyteller and how that trust can be broken.

Inspired by Rachel’s recent reading of Wizard’s Worth by Brittany Fichter (a clean romance/fantasy author on Kindle Unlimited), we explore: what it means to have poetic faith in an author (shoutout to Coleridge!), the emotional and logical rules of a fantasy world, how sudden character shifts—especially around love, curses, and morality—can shake that trust, personal reflections on autism, empathy, logic, and storytelling.

We also discuss storytelling tropes, faith-based worldviews, 80s action movies, and how some stories stretch belief (and that’s OK) while others break the contract entirely.

    Books Mentioned:

    Wizard’s Worth by Brittany Fichter

A Song of Ice and Fire (series)

    Movies Mentioned:

Kill Bill part 1 and 2

    The Matrix

  • 017: Dungeons & Dragons & Christians (Originally Aired May 31, 2025)
    2025/06/13

In this episode of Weatherford Daze, we dive into the fascinating—and sometimes controversial—intersection of Christian faith and tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop RPGs can be a meaningful, creative outlet for Christians and families.

We share our personal experiences as Christian parents, players, and storytellers—and why we believe role-playing games can actually strengthen community, foster empathy, and even encourage spiritual reflection.

We also talk candidly about concerns Christians might have around magic, role-play, and spiritual themes—and how modern gaming has responded to those concerns with more thoughtful, sensitive design. Whether you're a lifelong gamer, a skeptical onlooker, a curious parent, or exploring how faith and fantasy can go hand in hand, this episode offers a thoughtful, honest look at what role-playing games really are—and what they aren’t.
