Episode 318 brings us a powerful conversation with Chris Whittemore, whose mission is simple but incredibly important: save as many lives as possible while helping military members transition from military service back into everyday life. Through his work with a VSO, Chris helps veterans navigate disability claims and other services, while also working to protect those who may be taken advantage of because of their service. His goal is to reach as many people as he can, share his experiences, and make sure veterans know that someone is there for them. Chris is also continuing to build his voice as an author, currently working through the editing process for the next books in his “Whispers” series. Behind that work is his wife, Christina Whittemore, who has been his caregiver, support system, and partner throughout his journey. Through The Wife Family Therapy, LLC, Christina now provides therapy sessions around the world, using her own experiences to support veterans and families who may find themselves in similar situations. Her message is that the veteran isn't the only person who needs support—the entire family does. Chris admits that marketing his books and getting the word out is probably not his favorite part of the job—he'd almost rather reenlist and deploy! But he remains determined to share his story and reach anyone who might need to hear it. This episode also features the music of Devon Stewart, an artist who has found music to be both a creative outlet and a form of therapy. Devon loves his home and space in Alaska but also enjoys connecting with people and fellow musicians. He participates in a music therapy program that helps veterans through songwriting and singing, using music as a way to process experiences and emotions. Inspired by artists like Tenacious D and “Weird Al” Yankovic, Devon brings humor and personality to his music while still tackling meaningful subjects. As a father, he is focused on being there for his 11-year-old daughter and his 21-year-old son, recognizing the things he may have missed along the way. Ultimately, Devon hopes that something he writes or shares can help even one person—and if it does, that makes it all worthwhile. The three songs highlighted in this episode each tell a different story: 🎵 “Sleeping Ain’t So Easy” – A look at how the reality of our lives can be very different when we're awake versus when we're trying to sleep, and how difficult it can be to control what happens in those quiet hours. 🎵 “War Song” – A raw look at Army life and deployment, focusing on the things that aren't always talked about—the difficult, uncomfortable, and not-so-glamorous realities of being away from home. 🎵 “No Name” – An emotional reflection on reaching the point of needing to call 988 and being in that difficult space. It isn't an easy part of the story to revisit, but it speaks to the importance of reaching out when help is needed. This episode is ultimately about service, family, healing, and the power of sharing your story. Chris and Devon both remind us that sometimes the experiences that hurt the most can become the very things that help someone else keep going.
