This is The Bean Sí Containment Operation of 1847 at Westport, County Mayo, Ireland by Sascha Schmidt, a mythical creature horror story set inside a famine workhouse during the darkest winter of the Great Hunger. The banshee is not a spirit. It is a nocturnal mammal nesting in the salvaged thatch of the fever shed, using infrasound to stop the hearts of the dying before it shears the soft tissue from their faces. When the medical officer discovers white hairs in the ridgepole and a nest of milk teeth and human bone, he understands that the folklore his grandmother spoke was never metaphor. It was biology. It was breeding. And it had been waiting in the walls since before the Poor Law was written.
Recovered field reports and a sealed Salus Omnium compact reveal what happened next. A military captain arrives with thirty-six soldiers, a dispatch from Dublin Castle, and authority to burn anything necessary to close the wound. The doctor attempts evacuation. The colony spreads through contaminated bedding into the main workhouse. A subadult drops onto a child in the connecting passage. The ammonia marking the terminal patients cannot be washed off. By the first of November, thirty-one non-ambulatory patients remain in the east ward, their hearts already failing from weeks of infrasound exposure, and the breeding female is still roosting in the ridgepole with her young. The captain has turpentine. The doctor has laudanum. The decision is no longer medical.
Written by Sascha Schmidt, based on the lore of Beasts of the Ancient World, and narrated by the synthetic voice of Henry Atkinson.
