  • Episode 38: Where have we been all your life? (Did you miss us?)
    2025/11/27
We've been gone for a year. It's not your fault; you're great fans, you just weren't fulfilling our (admittedly) insatiable needs. Just kidding. Or am I?!?!? Given our new hectic rehearsal and gig schedule, I can't promise we'll be here every week for you, but we'll send you feet pics if you ask; something to keep you warm and horny when you can't hear our voices. But we finally got a chance to record a new episode and our aim was clear; to tell you - our adoring and fanatically loyal fans - about what we've been cooking up for this last year, and here it is. We now have a Taylor Swift tribute band. Okay, now that the laughter has died down, I'm serious. Like, no joke. After a gig sometime in the summer of 2024, Mike, Nick, and I (Jase) were chilling in the Taco Bell parking lot (shout out to Taco Bell) at 2 in the morning and Nick randomly brought up an idea. He said, "What if we made a Taylor Swift tribute band?" Neither I nor Mike thought he was serious, but we had just left a gig at a bar that was set to have a Taylor Swift night the following evening. They had a life-size cardboard cutout of her and, let's face it; she was (and continues to be) the biggest thing in the world. Nick mentioned his wife's sister had a female singer friend, and within a couple weeks, we had our first rehearsal with a small handful of easy-ish songs. Things didn't quite go as smoothly or quickly as we had hoped. We initially aimed for a debut in February of this year (2025), but we weren't anywhere close to ready. We're all perfectionists in our own way in this band and our aim with this tribute act, much like our aim with our 1990's band, was to recreate the album experience as much as possible. Mike needed to create a ton of new sounds for his guitar incorporating both acoustic and electric sounds, Nick needed to find a way to incorporate his electronic drums in with his acoustic drums to cover the more dancy-electronic sounds, and while I continue to play bass, I also picked up my keyboard again and had to create a multitude of piano, synth, and synth bass sounds. It took around a year from our first rehearsal to our first "mini" gig with 20-some songs, but a couple months later we up to nearly 30 songs, and in two weeks, we'll be playing our third "real" gig as Starbucks Lovers (a cheeky band name taken from her song Blank Space where it sounds like she's saying "Got a lot of Starbucks lovers; they'll tell you I'm insane..." see socials links below) at Gleason's in Peekskill with almost 35 songs spanning her entire career, including two from her newest album; performed with near-album accuracy with performance notes taken from tour footage, including several of Taylor's costume changes (although, she'll be changing backstage, so you have to get in real good with her if you want to see that. I'm a goddamn brilliant musician and in her band and I don't even get to see that, so good luck... So yeah, we've been busy. Join us in this episode as we talk about the journey we've all been on throughout this process. Unfortunately, the singer for Starbucks Lovers was not available to join us, but we promise we'll have her on in a future episode. --- Send us your questions, comments, concerns, nudes, and death threats to wereinabandpodcast@gmail.com - we'd love to talk about you on our next show! • Episode 35: Are we sellouts?
    2024/08/22

Selling out. What bands or artists do you know of that have "sold out"? What does that phrase even mean any more in an age where everyone of every age has a "brand" spread across social media, where everyone shamelessly monetizes every aspect of their personality or tries to make money from every hobby they undertake? Everyone's trying to make a buck these days, yet there are still holdouts who believe some artists have sold out. This week, we discuss the ins and outs of selling out in the music industry - whether it's even a consideration these days or how it impacts authenticity (or if it even does/can).

Come see our new tribute act called "36,000 Miles" It's a Vanessa Carlton Tribute show, but we play "1000 Miles" 36 times in a row!

  • Episode 34: On Professionalism & Local Musicians
    2024/08/08

Hey guys; first of all, PLEASE send us your comments, questions, or hate mail - we don't care; we just wanna hear from you! Ask us questions - anything you want to know about us, music, the local music scene, Jase's browser history, whatever - and we'll talk about it and give you a shout out! Email us at wereinaband@gmail.com or any of our social links below!

Thanks for checking out this latest episode of the pod. This week, we dive deep into what makes a band "professional." We discover that professionalism comes in more flavors than simply earning money for doing something; it can be how you conduct yourself, showing up on time, or, you know, maybe skipping that last shot of Fireball which might make you do ... questionable... things on stage. While J may be the only in the band to have ever earned 100% of his living playing music (back in the day), Mike and Nick are no slouches when it comes to professionalism. We spend most of our free time on band-related endeavors, show up to gigs on time, and get along with club owners and bar staff.

We don't get paid a lot, but we keep going because, well, we're professionals.

  • Episode 33: Mad Libs, clearly, are not our strong suit.
    2024/06/28

Public Pool Skin Infection. Goblin Cock. Three-Inch Infection (I'm sensing a theme...). The Taco Bell Three. Run For Cover.

What's in a band name, anyway? What makes a good one? This week, once we get past all of Jase's insecurities, rob Mike of his innocence, and toy with Nick's fragile emotions, we eventually get down to the business of band names.

Back in the day, you could name your band anything you wanted, change it, change members, etc. and no one would care. In the modern age of social media, a band needs to consider all things and all possible permutations of things to come related to the band name (including what the acronym of the band might be; I'm looking at you, Jimmy Eat World). We call this "branding." And from the outset, you need to not only name your band something cool, clever, catchy, and fun, you must also be original (meaning, don't name your band "The Guess Who" when there's already a band called "The Who" in popularity).

We have some fun with a band name generator and go over some of our favorite and least favorite band names. You might even learn a thing or two!

The love is fast, but it's ugly.

Thanks to everyone who's come out to our shows, either deliberately or because your friend dragged you out to the bar that night. We recently played the Barton Orchards Food Truck festival; a staggering 6-hour gig; five 45-minute sets punctuated by great food, beaitiful weather, adorable puppies, and local whiskey. We had a blast and can't wait to be back in November!

We always have a blast playing for you guys - you give us so much love and our only aim is to take you back to the 90's. We love all of you and love interacting with y'all. • Episode 32: Why is it so hard to find a band?
    2024/06/13

Why is it so hard to find a band? When we were kids (before social media was the center of everyone's life, if you want to know how old we are), you'd find bands organically; your neighbor, friend, classmate, etc. Back in the day, Craigslist used to be safe for kids (now it's just for weird hookups - hit me up in the m4mmmtw forum, by the way, if you're into crucifixion fetishes). But these days, people are desperate to find bands and have difficulty doing so. It gets even harder (giggity) as you get older, since everyone has baggage; kids, careers, vices, bitterness from previous bands, etc., or they're stuck in their ways, have dozens of songs that they expect others to learn (in other words, you're just helping to realize someone else's dream), or, the worst, they just haven't grown up; no money, transportation, or are just flakey or irresponsible.

Last week (the week before this podcast was released, the week after it was recorded), Run For Cover celebrated our 6th anniversary! If you would have told me (Jase) that the guys (well, most of them, anyway) that I met that one fateful night at a friend's house to try each other out, playing some Seven Mary Three and Third Eye Blind, not really sure where things would go, but for some reason scheduling our first gig three weeks from then... I would not have believed you. I don't have stats, but in my experience, local/cover bands just don't last that long, even when money and popularity is involved, so I'm ecstatic.

In this episode, we discuss what it takes to find and keep quality band members; a topic we haven't had to deal with in quite some time, thankfully. After six years, we each have some significant insight into what makes a band work or not work (not to mention what to do or not do to even just find other musicians).

  • Episode 31: Hop onto my dream ride: A.I. music is better than people music.
    2024/05/23

This week, the guys tackle a topic that's important in just about every industry - A.I. We explore some AI-generated music with Udio, a service that lets you type prompts in and it'll create a fully-produced, radio-ready song with singing and full-band arrangement. It's remarkable how far AI has come and terrifying how far it can (and probably will go). We explore a number of genres and styles - some are better than others, but, with as good as it is now, it'll be indistinguishable from human-created music in the very near future. To that point, you probably have been listening to AI-generated music for several years now and haven't even noticed...

Oh, and don't tell anyone, but Jase is terrified of spiders.
