The Watergate scandal transformed American politics by exposing abuses of presidential power, political espionage, and efforts to obstruct justice. Beginning with the 1972 break-in at Democratic Party headquarters, the investigation eventually reached President Richard Nixon and revealed the role of the White House cover-up. Nixon resigned in August 1974 rather than face likely impeachment and removal.
Beyond ending a presidency, Watergate permanently damaged public trust in government. It strengthened investigative journalism, congressional oversight, and the principle that even a president is not above the law, while leaving Americans far more skeptical of political leaders and official explanations.
