    Have you ever found yourself envious of a talent or skill someone else has? That desire can be either motivational or discouraging, right? Evidently this was another issue the apostle Paul needed to address among the Christians in Corinth, so today let’s dig into the 14th chapter of Paul’s first letter to them.

    Paul wrote: “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God… Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.” (1 Cor. 14:1-5) Do you see the problem which was creating chaos among the Christians in Corinth? The love they should be displaying toward each other, as Paul described in 1 Cor. 13, was being undermined by envy and jealousy! Yes, Paul urges them to ‘eagerly desire gifts of the Holy Spirit.’ Why?

    I’m sure you have noticed a dramatic rise in the number of voices demanding to be heard over the past few years. Amazing, isn’t it? Podcasts, social media, mainstream media and the easy availability of the airwaves to almost anyone, has created an information traffic jam, deluging all of us with far more information than we could ever absorb!

    So what voices are you listening to and WHY? Is God’s Word still a voice you seek to hear and do you trust God’s voice? Here at “Walking with Jesus” we will always bring you to Scripture and seek to keep you rooted there as we invite the Holy Spirit to speak clearly to us, guiding us in discernment for living God honoring lives in a rapidly changing world.

    Does your heart skip a beat when you hear someone say, “I have GREAT News for you“? Of course it does! So, I wonder what the greatest news is that you’ve ever heard?

    In the mid first century, all across the Roman empire, life was difficult, especially for Christians who claimed to be followers of Jesus. Why? Well, for many of the same reasons life is difficult for Christians in many places in our world today. Christians claim God forgives them of their sin guilt and God frees them of their sin condemnation because they put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior! No other religion gives assurance any god will forgive sin!

    In the part of the world where I live there is an obsession with predicting the future, how about where you live? Gambling has become big business here as millions of people bet on future sporting events or political elections. Amazingly, in Christian circles there is a fascination with prophetic future events with books, podcasts and conferences dedicated to seeking clarity about the WHEN and the HOW and even the WHO are key aspects of God’s next major actions in our world.

    Even when Jesus was here on earth, some of His closest followers occasionally asked Jesus for clarity about the future. Matt. 24 describes one of Jesus’ most significant discussions about the future, prompted by this question from His disciples: “…what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matt. 24:3)

    Have you ever found yourself GREATLY encouraged to a point of overflowing JOY, by the visit of a friend who brings you much anticipated news about people you have not seen in a long time? I love such reunions, how about you? So, let’s watch one of those today.

    For quite some time we’ve been traveling with the apostle Paul, following the chronology, found in the Bible, which tells us the story of Paul’s missionary journeys and the remarkable things God did in many cities and towns throughout what are today the countries of Turkey, Macedonia and Greece. Yesterday we watched Paul leave the great city of Ephesus, run out of town by a riot! (Acts 20:1)

    Many people consider Christianity to be nothing more than wishful thinking, offering false hope to people who believe in things they cannot prove tangibly. What if? What if they are right?

    That’s what many people in mid-first century Corinth were saying about those people who claimed to be Christians. So, Paul was led by the Holy Spirit of God to address this issue head on in chapter 15 of Paul’s letter we’ve been reviewing. Yesterday we looked at Paul’s foundational claims about the greatest news of all time, ‘the Gospel’. (1 Cor. 15:1-7)

    Are you one of those people who enjoys turning over the calendar page to a new month? Does it feel like a fresh start? Is it exhilarating or frightening to you?

    A few years ago, the only child my wife and I were ever blessed by God to have, was born on September 30. I remember waking up October 1st and everything was different; I was now Dad with a baby girl! I was frightened at the thought of all the responsibility I had. Today she’s a remarkable woman who loves Jesus, loves her husband and her five daughters! She has accomplished remarkable things in her life and is building an amazing legacy she will pass to those five wonderful, amazing girls. My wife and I have had the privilege of watching it happen, even from a distance.
