If God is light and there’s no darkness in him, what does that mean for the parts of our lives we keep carefully hidden? We start with John’s insistence that Christian faith is grounded in the real, historical Jesus someone people heard, saw, and touched not a theory, not a vibe, and not something we can outsource to a more “spiritual” person.
Then we lean into 1 John 1:7 and the surprising link John makes between walking in the light and real fellowship. When a community is fractured by spiritual elitism, arrogance, or image management, the fix isn’t better religious performance. It’s truth that reaches our motives, fears, habits, wounds, and failures. We talk about why genuine Christian community can’t be built on carefully managed versions of ourselves, and how trust grows when people can say “I was wrong,” “you hurt me,” and “I forgive you,” then commit to the work of repair.
We also draw a hard line between gospel grace and self help. Confession and honesty matter, but they don’t cleanse us. John points us to the center: the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Walking in the light doesn’t mean perfection; it means we stop hiding and bring our whole lives into the truth and grace of God. If you’ve been living off someone else’s spirituality, this conversation will help you name what’s out of sync and take one step toward freedom.
