On September 11, Father Mychal Judge ran toward the fire. The FDNY chaplain stayed with his men, and became Victim 0001.
He was not a firefighter. He carried no hose. He had no way to stop what was coming. When the North Tower was hit, he left the friary, walked into the smoke, and went looking for the people who needed a priest.
Mayor Giuliani caught his arm. “Mychal, please pray for us.”
Father Judge said, “I always do.” Then he ran on.
He prayed over the dying on the plaza. He went back into the lobby. When they told him to leave, he said, “I’m not finished here.” At 9:59 a.m., the South Tower fell. Debris tore through the room where he was standing. He was 68. His body was the first recovered and officially identified. They called him Victim 0001.
This is not another film about the towers. It is the story of one decision: everyone else was trying to get away from the fire. Father Mychal Judge was trying to get to the people inside it.
