Twenty-five years after 9/11, the Vermont National Guard gathered for a solemn remembrance, honoring their swift response when nearly 700 members were activated and F-16s became among the first jets in the nation to scramble over New York. Veterans like Kenneth Ackley recall the grit and unity of that day, while current F-35 pilots stand on the shoulders of those who flew before them. The ceremony — complete with taps played by Stephen Goshorn, the national anthem, and a ceremonial takeoff — drew dignitaries including Governor Phil Scott and Senator Peter Welch, underscoring how this moment still echoes with sacrifice, resilience, and unbroken service.
