Medicare’s new AI prior authorization system, rolled out in six states last January, promised faster approvals—but instead, patients and doctors are facing delays, denials, and painful limbo. A lawsuit forced CMS to release internal docs revealing the AI’s early failures: massive backlogs and frustrating bottlenecks. What was meant to speed things up has become a major roadblock, exposing the real cost of tech missteps in healthcare.

British Columbia’s government has quietly buried fossil fuel royalty data, reversing a decade of transparency by blacking out company-specific payments under the guise of “confidentiality” for major oil and gas players. A media freedom of information request revealed only names and vague summaries, sparking outrage from legal experts like Rob Botterell, who helped draft BC’s FOI laws — calling it “disturbing” and emblematic of a broader trend toward secrecy. Officials claim new rules since 2018 protect commercially sensitive data, but critics argue this erodes public trust, especially when logging royalties remain visible while oil and gas payments vanish into the shadows.

Mutton, the last known Salish woolly dog, whose pelt has returned to Canadian soil for the first time in over 150 years, is a haunting relic of an extinct breed once revered for its fluffy fur used in sacred textiles. Discovered in a Smithsonian drawer two decades ago, this rare pelt—on loan to UBC’s Museum of Anthropology until 2027—is more than just history; it’s a living thread connecting Indigenous oral traditions, ancestral weaving practices, and a culture nearly erased by colonialism. These dogs, bred for their prized wool and treated like family, were integral to Salish life—from canoe journeys to ceremonial blankets. Genomic studies reveal their unique curly undercoat, while weavers like Debra Sparrow recall their fur as “gold.” Their extinction, tied to settler expansion and cultural disruption, serves as a sobering reminder of what’s lost—and why preserving these stories matters now more than ever.
